Leptospirosis Vaccine
Leptospirosis is a serious disease that can make dogs very sick. It is caused by tiny bacteria that live in the urine (pee) of wild animals such as rats, mice, raccoons, coyotes, and skunks. Dogs can get sick when they touch or drink water, soil, or puddles that have these germs in them.
Many people think leptospirosis only happens in farms or forests, but dogs in the city are also at risk. In Phoenix, Arizona, there are many stray animals, rodents, and wildlife living close to people. After rain, bacteria can wash into puddles, parks, sidewalks, and yards. Dogs can step in this water, lick their paws, or drink from puddles and get infected. Even dogs that stay mostly indoors can be exposed during walks, trips to the park, backyard play, or from bacteria brought into the house on your shoes.
Leptospirosis spreads when the bacteria enter a dog’s body through the mouth, nose, eyes, or small cuts in the skin. Once inside, it can quickly make dogs very ill. This disease can damage the kidneys and liver. It can cause fever, vomiting, diarrhea, tiredness, muscle pain, yellow eyes or gums, and loss of appetite. Some dogs may need to stay in the hospital, and sadly, some dogs can die from this disease.
Vaccinating your dog is the best way to protect people. The vaccine is safe and helps your dog fight off the disease if they are exposed. Less of the bacteria is shed in the urine, so there is less risk of exposure to humans. It is much easier and cheaper to prevent leptospirosis than to treat it.
