Why Is Puppy Socialization Important?

Why Is Puppy Socialization Important?
March 15, 2017

Dogs benefit from early exposure to new experiences and interactions that bring them into contact with other people and other animals. In this way, you will be able to take your dog into a variety of situations, knowing that he will be able to manage his emotions and feel secure.

At What Age Should I Begin To Socialize My Puppy?

Dog experts agree that the age from 7 weeks to 4 months is the peak time for the socialization of your puppy. At this age, he or she is most accepting of new experiences and has not yet learned negative behaviors that result from fear or anxiety. Puppy vaccinations generally begin at 6 to 8 weeks and are given every 3 to 4 weeks until 16 weeks of age. This means your puppy can't be kept isolated alone at home until vaccines are complete. Permanent social behavior problems & fear behaviors will result. Start by taking your pet to a friend with a calm adult dog to play in a controlled situation. Then, schedule a puppy class for training. Later, you can then begin taking your puppy to the dog park. Always intervene if your puppy seems overwhelmed, frightened, or becomes aggressive.

Can I Take My Puppy To Doggy Daycare?

Doggy daycare centers can be a beneficial way to socialize your puppy and provide entertainment for him while you are away at work or for other activities. You should ensure that the group is carefully monitored at all times to ensure the safety of your puppy when he plays with other animals.  Also, make sure the daycare requires all the puppies to have current vaccinations to reduce exposure of disease to your pet. A large percentage of puppies are well protected against Parvovirus & other diseases by 12 weeks of age, however, some are not.

What Health Concerns Are Involved in Socializing Puppies?

It’s important to ensure that your puppy is vaccinated against infectious diseases that he can catch from other dogs and that can make him very sick. In addition, you should make sure the facility where your dog interacts is kept clean and free of feces. Parasites and diseases can be transmitted through contact with infected objects or from feces, so a hygienic environment is important to avoid illness. Ensuring your dog is exposed to a variety of situations in a calm manner before 4 months of age will reduce fears, phobias, and behavior problems lifelong.
